Baltimore Orioles great Cal Ripken Jr. broke Major League Baseballs longstanding record for consecutive games played by surpassing the legendary Lou Gehrig on Sept. 6 1995 when he played in his 2131st straight game. The feat was at one time thought to be unbreakable but persistence and good health on Ripken's part proved otherwise. This lot includes one of Ripkens signed and game-worn Orioles batting helmets that was worn by the Hall of Famer during the 95 season in which he broke the hallowed mark. The size 7 3/8 Orioles helmet with single left-side ear flap shows good game usage and includes the Orioles black-and-orange logo on the front along with Ripkens uniform No. 8 on the top of the brim. Ripken has signed the helmet in silver between his uniform number and the Orioles logo and added #8 just below it. The signature is strong and rates 9/10 in our book. Includes MEARS A5 Letter of Opinion. MEARS inaccurately states that batting helmet is circa 1996. Orioles did not have number decals on their helmets in 1996. Photo evidence shows Cal Ripken wearing this same style during his record-breaking 1995 season.
