Featured here is a 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics gold winner's medal presented to a member of the Cuban baseball team. Made of gilt silver with gold plating, it measures 70 mm in diameter and weighs 265 grams (ribbon included). The designer was Xavier Corberó and the minter was Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre. The obverse depicts a seated Victory in Modernist style holding a winner’s crown and palm branch with Olympic rings and "XXV Olimpiada Barcelona 1992” in raised text. The reverse has the 1992 Summer Games legend of a stylized man leaping over the Olympic rings. The original striped ribbon in Olympic colors remains attached in near-pristine condition.

‘92 Summer Olympics winners’ medals are notoriously prone to tarnishing and oxidation despite being only three decades old. This one is very well-preserved and maintains its shiny golden glow. There is moderate surface wear with a tiny chip on the reverse along the right rim that, fortunately, does not affect its lovely aesthetics. It comes with its official black carrying pouch issued by the Barcelona Olympic Committee (instead of traditional cases). A Cuban collector procured this medal directly from the original recipient who wishes to remain anonymous.

The 1992 Summer Olympics were the last Games to be held the same year as the Winter Olympics. Baseball made its official debut on the Olympic program, with eight nations fielding teams of amateur players. Cuba soundly defeated Chinese Taipei in the gold medal game by a score of 11-1. In the bronze medal game, Japan beat USA, 8-3. The release of Nelson Mandela and the end of Apartheid allowed South Africa to make its first Olympic appearance since 1950. One of the highlights was USA Basketball's "Dream Team" which created a media frenzy in the coastal Catalan city unlike any other.
