In 1992 at the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona Spain U.S. hurdler Kevin Young won the gold medal in the men’s 400 meter hurdles. In the finals in fact Young set a new world record and Olympic record by clocking in at 46.78 seconds which remains the fastest time ever posted in the event and the only time 47 seconds had been broken.This lot features a United States flag signed and inscribed by Young. While not verified we have reason to believe that this is the flag with which Young paraded around the track moments after his record run in Barcelona.
The flag which measures 59” wide by 34” high has been signed by Young in black marker and inscribed with the following text: “TO ROBERT RICE III IF IT WEREN’T FOR YOUR SUPPORT IT WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN THE SAME!!! THANKS.” We believe Rice was one of Young's coaches or trainers. Young then signed his name underneath that passage and added “400M HURDLES *OR *WR *AR 46.78” the abbreviations of which mean Olympic Record World Record and American Record. The lot includes an autographed 5” x 7” color photo of a smiling Young with the inscription “400M” and a small drawing of a hurdle.
