By 1991 Tony Gwynn was already the greatest player in the history of the Padres franchise. "Mr. Padre” set the club record for triples and stolen bases and he had won four National League batting titles. Although he had enough at-bats to qualify for another batting title in '91 Gwynn refused to go on the DL and ride out a title he felt would be unearned. Thus Gwynn’s batting average dipped and he finished 3rd in batting average. Despite the loss of the title the slugger showed he truly was “Mr. Padre” putting the good of his team above the pursuit of an individual batting title.

Gwynn’s 1991 grey road jersey has “SAN DIEGO” arched across the chest in navy white and orange tackle twill. A Rawlings size 46 label is sewn inside the lower left front tail with a “SET 1 1991” hand tag affixed. The back has “GWYNN” in individual navy tackle twill sewn above his number “19” in navy white and orange tackle twill. The jersey shows light game use with some puckering and edge fraying on the tackle twill graphics and light perspiration staining in the collar area. A true gamer from the greatest Padre of them all.
