Presented here is a marvelous game-worn shirt and cap from one of the most colorful umpires of the modern era Dutch Rennert who worn this combination during the 1989 Battle of the Bay World Series that was disrupted by the tragic '89 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Known for his exaggerated strike calls Rennert worked in the National League from 1973-92 and was behind the plate for the final out of that historic Fall Classic in which the Oakland A's swept the cross-bay rival San Francisco Giants. He was preparing to work 1st base for that fateful Game 3 when Candlestick Park began to tremble uncontrollably and the TV monitors all went blank. Rennert umpired in six National League Championship Series two All-Star Games and three World Series. For those who like a touch of irony with their memorabilia it should be noted that Rennert was quietly retired in 1992 because of trouble with his eyesight. Ahem. Thats a nice saga to complement this piece.

The light blue umpires shirt shows solid game use with some light staining. The embroidered National League emblem patch is found on the front left pocket and his famed No. 16 is on the right sleeve in navy blue tackle twill above the embroidered black and white ABG patch noting the passing of MLB Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti. The 1989 World Series patch is on the left sleeve above the embroidered Champions logo on the edge. Shirt has the appropriate Hathaway label at the color (wash instructions above it) and the tiny Hathaway H embroidered in red at the extreme edge of the tail. The accompanying cap is a perfect complement enhanced even more by a striking black Sharpie Rennert autograph on the inside of the front with his No. 16 inscription added alongside. Size 7 1/8 cap has appropriate New Era tagging on the sweatband and the interlocking NL embroidered in white on the front. Like the shirt the cap reveals appropriate game use with some dirt on the brim and top. Overall both items come in superb problem-free condition. This is a very unique lot with umpires clothing and regalia not typically offered at auction especially in light of the historic nature of the '89 Series and the ironic condition of the popular Rennert.
