During the 1988 NFL season the San Francisco 49ers led by their legendary quarterback Joe Montana and wide receiver Jerry Rice were on their way to winning the franchise’s third Super Bowl of the decade. After posting a rather pedestrian 10-6 regular-season record the Niners proceeded to annihilate the Minnesota Vikings 34-9 before blasting the Chicago Bears in the NFC title game 28-3. In Super Bowl XXIII on January 22 1989 the Niners nipped the Cincinnati Bengals 20-16 when Montana hit John Taylor for a 10-yard TD pass with 39 seconds left. It completed a 10-play 92-yard drive that remains one of the greatest in NFL history.
This lot features a 1988 San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl XXIII Champions 10K gold lady's ring that was issued to the wife of longtime team scout Neil Schmidt who worked diligently for the team for 28 years. He passed away in 2006. The beautifully designed size 6 ring boasts three large diamonds representing the team’s three Super Bowl titles on the top with four smaller diamonds all of which is surrounding by raised lettering that reads: “SAN FRANCISCO FORTY NINERS 1988.” One shank simply reflects the 49ers “SF” logo while the other reads “SUPER BOWL XXIII.” The inside band is engraved “10K©JOSTENS” and includes the wife's initials “RGS.” The ring presents in outstanding condition.
