Magic and the Lakers continued their winning ways throughout the decade as they won four more titles over the next seven seasons including an exciting four-games-to-two win over their arch-rival the Boston Celtics to close out the 1986-87 campaign. After hitting the game-winning shot in Game 4 at the Boston Garden which Johnson dubbed a junior junior junior skyhook over both Robert Parish and Kevin McHale the masterful point guard led the Lakers to their fourth title. Not surprisingly he was once again named NBA Finals MVP after averaging 26.2 points 13 assists eight rebounds and 2.3 steals per game. It marked his third and final NBA Finals MVP award. It also marked the end of the Magic/Bird era as the Celtics leading scorer Larry Bird would not reach another NBA Finals before retiring in 1992.
This lot features a highly coveted pair of 1987 Magic Johnson dual-signed and NBA Finals game-worn Converse Weapons shoes. The tri-color (yellow purple and white) sneakers were actually awarded to then-Boston Celtics ball boy James Johnson. According to the ball boy: When I first met Magic I was in awe of him like any other kid. After a few seasons getting to know him during the Lakers visits Magic became a true friend. Every time he came into town he always made time to sit and talk with a simple ball boy like me.
In June of 87 after the Lakers won the first two games of the NBA Finals over the Celtics at the Fabulous Forum the L.A. squad traveled to Beantown to face Bird and company at the old Boston Garden. Johnson the ball boy remembers: I was excited to see my friend Magic again. We shook hands and gave each other a hug. He told me he had a gift for me. From his bag he pulled out a pair of Converse Weapons the same pair he wore during the first two games at The Forum and gave them to me. As he laced up a new pair for Game 3 he signed the gifted pair for me. I knew these were special.
For the record Magic scored 51 points over the first two games and dished out 33 assists so the shoes as expected show plenty of game use. Branded MAGIC in purple across the ankle area on either shoe they were both signed Magic Johnson on the outside by the future NBA Hall of Famer in what appears to be faded black pen. Vintage gamers signed by one of the greatest assists leaders in NBA history.
Includes detailed Letter of Authenticity from the Celtics ball boy who acquired them. Autographs pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
