In celebration of Super Bowl XX in January of 1986 sports artist BernieFuchs illustrated an impressive artist’s rendering of each of the MostValuable Players from the previous 19 Super Bowls. With Bart Starr (SB I& II) Terry Bradshaw (XIII & XIV) and Joe Montana (XVI &XIX) each being named the MVP of multiple Super Bowls to that point andboth Harvey Martin and Randy White earning co-MVP winners from SuperBowl XII there were a total of 17 different players earning MVP statusfrom the first 19 Super Bowls. This lot features a beautifully framedand mounted “Super Bowl XX” lithograph showing those 17 playerspositioned inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum the site of thevery first two Super Bowls. All 17 players plus the artist has signedthe limited edition (#9/55) NFL print in gold fine point marker. Inaddition to the aforementioned names other notable signatures includeJoe Namath Len Dawson Chuck Howley Roger Staubach Jake Scott LarryCsonka Franco Harris Lynn Swann Fred Biletnikoff Jim Plunkett JohnRiggins and Marcus Allen. Its overall measurements are 36” wide by 33”high.
In addition the lot features a framed limited edition (#51/300)lithograph entitled “Silver Anniversary Super Bowl All-Time Team” thatshows the famous Vince Lombardi amongst a crowd of standout playersearning the distinction. Signed in pencil by the artist Cliff Spohnthe print showcases 26 NFL legends including offensive stars like JoeMontana Jerry Rice John Taylor Ronnie Lott Lynn Swann Franco Harrisand Larry Csonka along with defensive stalwarts such as Mean JoeGreene Randy White Jack Lambert Mel Blount and Mike Singletary. All26 players featured as well as Coach Lombardi are positioned with theirfacsimile signatures showing in black beneath the montage. Again this second piece is not signed by the players only the artist.
These two pieces comes from the personal collection of the late DonWeiss who worked in the NFL league offices from 1968-2001 as Directorof Public Relations 1968-77 Director of Operations 1977-94 and mostnotably Director of Super Bowl Game-Day Operations 1977-2001.
