Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira – thankfully known simply as Sócrates, was a philosopher, physician, political activist, and one of the most intellectually compelling figures in football history. Sporting a suave beard and white headband (often spreading a political message), the Brazilian midfielder was the epitome of cool in the late 1970s and early '80s. His sense of style and creative ability on the pitch, along with a medical degree earned during his playing career, gave him the moniker "Doctor Sócrates."
While his national team career with Seleção was brief, it was certainly impactful as Sócrates captained Brazil’s 1982 World Cup squad and scored twice at the ’86 World Cup in Mexico. Most of his professional career was spent in his home country where he starred primarily for famed club Corinthians in São Paulo.
The great Sócrates wore this classic canary Brazil National Team jersey during the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. The yellow jersey displays the three-star CBF crest and the logo of shirt manufacturer Topper on the chest., with the number "18" he wore during the tournament on the reverse in green. The V-neck design with green collar and green cuffed sleeves was the Brazilian squad's official home kit at the '86 World Cup. The shirt displays evidence of adequate wear with no condition issues.
The 1986 World Cup represented Sócrates' final major tournament, and this Seleção side featuring Zico, Falcão, and Junior is remembered as one of the most gifted Brazilian squads of all time despite getting knocked out by France on PK's in the quarterfinals.
Jersey authentication is provided by MEARS. Provenance is of the highest order as it comes from the collection of Dr. José Luis Runco, who served as Brazil's team medic from 1984-2014.
