1986 Fleer Basketball stands as the most popular and influential sports card set in the modern era. Anchored by Michael Jordan, it features rookie cards of several other Hall of Famers including Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing, Isiah Thomas, Dominique Wilkins, Karl Malone, Clyde Drexler, James Worthy and Chris Mullin. This mostly high-grade complete set of 132 is fresh to the hobby and comes with the full 11-card ’86 Fleer Sticker set as well. Our consignor built this set entirely from scratch, pulling cards straight from '86 Fleer packs.
We recently sent 26 cards to SGC for grading, and 24 came back NM 7 or better. Eight earned NM/MT+ 8.5 or 9. The #57 Jordan rookie is SGC EX 5 and MJ’s #8 Sticker is SGC EX/NM 6. Other notables are #7 Barkley NM/MT+ 8.5, #68 Karl Malone MINT 9 and #26 Drexler MINT 9. Most landed in the SGC 8 to 8.5 range such as #82 Olajuwon, #32 Ewing, #109 Thomas, #9 Larry Bird and #31 Julius Erving. The remaining raw cards appear NM to Mint with solid centering overall, presenting more advantageous grading opportunities. The Sticker cards – notorious for wax staining (especially on the backs) – have clean and smooth surfaces on both sides. Six of the seven stickers submitted earned NM 7 to NM/MT 8 grades from SGC. Considering the hobby’s progressive shift to now extremely strict grading standards, this set, in our opinion, ranks up there with ones completely graded 10+ years ago with 8.0+ GPAs in the PSA registry.
