In the mid-1980s, Star Company bridged an important gap for basketball card collectors after the departure of Topps in 1982 and before the arrival of Fleer in 1986. Some of the greatest hoopers of all time made their NBA debuts during that time: Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Clyde Drexler, etc. Instead of being sold in traditional packs with chewing gum, 1983-85 Star Co. cards were packaged by individual team or subset in manufacturer-sealed bags. While production centered around conventional 2½-by-3½-inch cards, the company also produced these colorful oversized 5x7-inch beauties in 1985 known as “Team Supers.” Offered here is the Houston Rockets five-card set headlined by a rookie Olajuwon graded NM-MT+ 8.5 by Beckett Grading Services (subgrades: 9 centering, 8.5 edges, 8.5 corners, 9 surface), a rather harsh assessment by our standards. (The corners and edges appear Mint 9 in our book.) Rounding out the Rockets starting five in this set are Ralph Sampson (NM-MT), Rodney McCray (NM), Lionel Hollins (NM-MT) and Lewis Lloyd (Mint). A rare Rockets complete set from this unique ’85 Star subset that continues to gain appreciation and prestige.
