This hobby-fresh example of the coveted 1980-81 Topps Larry Bird #34 (Rookie), Julius Erving Scoring Leader #174, and Magic Johnson #139 (Rookie) was recently graded by PSA and received a NM-MT 8 designation. PSA added a rather harsh “ST” qualifier for what we can only assume stems from a barely visible mark or line below Julius Erving’s printed name along the bottom front edge. 1980-81 Topps basketball is notorious for its off-centering and seemingly unavoidable print defects on the white background due to the variety of player and color groupings. At a minimum, this card, featuring three of the best players of all time, should have passed as a NM 7 or NM+ 7.5 with an unqualified “PD” due to its standout corners and terrific centering. Dr. J, Bird and Magic dominated the 1980s in almost every category. It's only fitting that Bird and Magic, whose intense rivalry helped turn the NBA into the live entertainment, money-making machine that it is today, should be pictured together on the same rookie card.
