Presented here is a scarce 3rd Place Bronze medal from the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics complete with its original ribbon and original presentation case and box. The Yugoslavia-hosted Games were the first Winter Olympics held in a socialist state coming on the heels of the 1980 Summer Olympics hosted in communist USSR. Winners medals from the '84 Winter Games are among the more unique looking shapes and designs in history, having the abstract outline of an oversized tooth if you will. The obverse has a stylized snowflake logo and the Olympic rings displayed within a circle surrounded by "XIV ZIMSKE OLIMPIJSKE IGRE" above and "SARAJEVO 1984" below. The reverse has the stylized head of an athlete crowned with a laurel wreath. Struck at the Majdanpek mint in Belgrade, it includes a small "M" mark on the front. A long orange (over 30" if stretched) ribbon is attached to a wide loop at the top. The medal itself is 68mm at its longest and weighs 192 grams.

The event, normally inscribed on the back, is blank because this particular medal was unawarded. This likely explains the completeness and remarkable condition of the medal, ribbon, case and box -- an extremely rare set to find all together. The level of patina to the bronze surface, ever so faint on the obverse, is just slightly more pronounced on the reverse relief design. The ribbon is essentially Mint once the creases are ironed out from being folded neatly underneath the medals fitted slot. The blue leather-bound presentation case that houses the medal and ribbon within a plush blue velvet and silk-lined bed is flawless. And the blue cardboard box that encloses it all has some creasing on one side, but is otherwise in great shape. This is the first winners medal from the 1984 Winter Games we have ever had the pleasure of offering.
