In 1984 the city of Los Angeles California hosted the Summer Olympic Games. Outstanding performances like U.S. gymnast Mary Lou Retton's gold-medal-winning outing in the individual all-around competition - the first American female gymnast to do so - to U.S. speedster Carl Lewis equaling the 1936 performance of American icon Jesse Owens by winning four gold medals in track and field. But it was also marred by unfortunate events including Mary Decker's infamous fall after bumping into South African Zola Budd who was representing Great Britain during the women's 3000 meter run.
This lot features a 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Summer Games 1st place winner's gold medal sample. It is presented beautifully archived inside a wooden stand seven inches wide by 7.5" high. It is positioned with the ribbon at the top sporting the 1984 Summer Games colors against a backdrop of black felt behind glass. Made by Jostens (manufacturer's sticker on bottom of wooden base) it has the exact dimensions as the gold medals that were awarded to competitors at the '84 Games. The obverse of the medal reads "SAMPLE XXIII OLYMPIAD LOS ANGELES 1984" with Nike Goddess of Victory seated above the stadium. The reverse shows a winner carried by jubilant athletes with "SAMPLE" near the top.
