Most of the great 1986-87 Fleer Basketball rookie cards including Michael Jordan were preceded by true debut rookies from little known Star Company which distributed their product in 12-card team sets that came sealed in plastic bags. Presented here is a 1984-85 Star Co. Basketball complete set of the 288 cards with all but one bag sealed in its plastic bag. Production numbers for the 2nd year issue are believed to be 3000 according to Star’s original order form but few remain almost completely unopened like this one.

The Chicago Bulls team bag featuring the heavily-coveted #101 Michael Jordan XRC on top remains sealed with MJ’s true rookie card appearing in NM to Mint condition. It has sharp corners no chipping on the edges and is just a tad off-center horizontally (45-55). A great example of one of the rarest basketball cards out there.

Michael Jordan has two other cards his 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist #195 and his 1985 Rookie of the Year #288. These two came in the only opened bag which had 14 Olympic and career highlight themed cards including Kareem Dr. J and Isiah Thomas. We decided to open this bag to get a sense of condition for the entire set and to ensure it was an authentic set as there have been reports of unoriginal sets circulating the hobby. Beckett Authentication performed a soft grading for these 14 cards including the two other MJ’s and they all fall in the NM 7 to Mint+ 9.5 range.

#202 Charles Barkley XRC #235 John Stockton XRC and #237 Akeem Olajuwon XRC are the other true rookies in the set besides #101 Jordan XRC. Other highlights include #'s 1 Larry Bird 2 Danny Ainge 9 Kevin McHale 12 Larry Bird (MVP) 22 Bill Walton 76 Dominique Wilkins 172 Magic Johnson 173 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 201 Moses Malone and 204 Julius Erving. Based on Beckett’s assessment of the one opened bag and our opinion on the 23 unopened bats we feel this set is mostly NM-MT or better.
