Addendum: This jersey hails from Sandberg's second full MLB season. Heading has been updated.
Along with Ernie Banks and Billy Williams one of the most popular Chicago Cubs of the 20th century was Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg. The 10-time All-Star 9-time Gold Glover and 7-time Silver Slugger was a fixture at second base for the Cubbies from 1982 until the mid-90's. This terrific 1983 Sandberg game-worn home jersey hails from his second MLB season one year beforehis '84 National League MVP campaign. It easily stands as one of the finest Sandberg gamers offered publicly achieving the highest A10 mark from MEARS. "Ryno" won his first Gold Glove in '83 batting .261 with 165 hits 37 stolen bases and 94 runs scored. His power started to come the following season as he would retire with 282 long-balls including a home run crown in 1990.
This blazing white blue-pinstriped pullover boasts the distinctive circular Cubs logo patch in blue and red tackle twill with Sandberg's No. 23 applied to the back in blue tackle twill. This style had no NOB. The sleeve and V-neck collar have blue knit trim. The appropriate Wilsonmanufacturer's tagging is situated within the collar with Size "42" and washing instructions indicated. A white strip tag beneathreads "23 83 1 42" which is chain-stitched in blue cursive. There is also a small white strip tag on the left fronttail labeled "83" in blue stitching for the season worn. The shirt is quite clean but does shows moderate wear with puckered numbers and light piling. Just a stunning early 80's example from Chicago's other beloved athlete who wore number 23.
Letter from MEARS with perfect A10 grade.
