Here is an exceptional piece of NASL history: a 1980 New York Cosmos match-worn away jersey worn by Brazilian superstar Oscar himself, preserved in his personal collection.
The long-sleeve jersey is constructed in navy blue heavy cotton with subtle vertical pinstripe ribbing throughout, manufactured by Ellesse — the iconic Italian sportswear brand — with the maker's label and size tag visible at the collar interior. The jersey features a yellow and white striped turn-down collar with a center button placket, and yellow sleeve numbering on the right arm. The left chest bears the embroidered Cosmos club badge — the iconic circular crest with a stylized football and the distinctive Cosmos swoosh design in blue, green, yellow and white — one of football's most recognizable club crests from the sport's American golden age. The reverse displays bold applied yellow lettering "OSCAR" above the "#4" numeral, identifying the wearer without question.
The jersey shows appropriate wear including fabric softening and minor soiling consistent with NASL match use. Oscar joined the Cosmos at their peak, sharing a locker room with Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, and Carlos Alberto. This jersey, worn by Oscar himself, is among the most direct and personal items in the entire collection.
The Oscar Bernardi Collection
This shirt comes from the personal collection of José Oscar Bernardi, better known as Oscar, who played for the Brazil National Team from 1977 to 1986. Included is a letter of provenance signed by Oscar. Most jerseys in the collection were obtained directly through player swaps after competition. Others were acquired via gifts or trade with footballers in Oscar’s wide network of teammates and friends. At age 71, he still resides in Brazil and is ready for his collection to be appreciated by others in the hobby.
