Billy Martin the popular 1950's New York Yankees baseball player and later manager was known for his fiery temper. Whether he was playing second base for the vaunted New York Yankees of the 1950s or managing the Bronx Bombers in the 70s and 80s Martin was remembered as a pistol. He is best known as the manager of the Yankees a position he held five different times. As New Yorks manager he led the team to consecutive American League pennants in 1976 and 1977; the Yankees were swept in the 1976 World Series by the Cincinnati Reds but triumphed over the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games in the 1977 Fall Classic. He also had notable managerial tenures with several other A.L. squads leading four of them to division championships. One of those other clubs was the Oakland As who Martin managed from 1980 to 82.

Offered here is Martins signed and game-worn 1980 Oakland As road jersey. The green knit jersey is lettered As over the left breast with 1 on the reverse. Martin appears on the reverse just above the number. All letters and numbers are in white with gold trim with the exception of his last name which is entirely in white tackle twill. A McAuliffe Uniform Corp. manufactures tag is sewn on to the bottom center of the front tail of the jersey positioned alongside a 1980 year tag a 38 size tag and a washing instructions tag. Martin signed the front of the jersey in black marker near the right breast. There is a 2 x 3 adhesive mark slightly touching the bottom of the signature. The jersey is original and unaltered exhibiting modest wear. This was his first season of managing the As a time when he introduced his special brand of Billy Ball to the northern California ball club. The team finished the year with 83 wins 29 more than the season before he arrived.
