When the Lakers selected Earvin “Magic” Johnson with the first pick of the 1979 NBA draft an exciting era of “Showtime” basketball had arrived in Los Angeles. After leading Michigan State to an NCAA title in ’79 Magic went on to guide L.A. to five NBA titles over a nine-year stretch. His rookie year was unlike any in league history as the 6’ 9” point guard from Lansing Mich. averaged 18.0 points 7.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game to take home Rookie of the Year honors. In addition he became the only rookie ever to win the NBA Finals MVP award after leading the Lakers past the Philadelphia 76ers in six games culminating in a Game 6 performance that stands as one of the greatest individual performances in NBA Finals history.

Featured here is a pair of Magic’s 1980 rookie season game-worn sneakers acquired by our consignor outside the Lakers locker room immediately following Game six of the 1980 NBA Finals. While we are not certain that these were worn by Magic in game 6 (another pair exists with credible provenance as such) we believe that they were at least his back up pair for that game and were likely worn previously in the 1980 postseason. The size 14.5 white Converse All-Star high-tops feature purple logos and “MAGIC” stamped in purple on the ankle. They display extensive game use with cracking on the exterior from aging. The original shoelaces are present and intact.

A comprehensive LOA from our consignor can be viewed online explaining how his relationship with Lakers coach Paul Westhead enabled him to acquire these shoes. Given their vintage and documented provenance these easily rank among the finest pair of Magic shoes we have handled to date.
