Who can ever forget the Miracle on Ice of 1980 when the young United States Mens Hockey Team stunned the world by defeating the vaunted Russians on their way to winning Olympic gold at Lake Placid New York? At that Olympiad the player manning the pipes for Team USA was goaltender Jim Craig from Easton Massachusetts and the coach was none other than Herb Brooks from the University of Minnesota. This is the patriotic red-white and blue sweater that was worn by Craig during U.S. exhibition hockey games in preparation for the start of the 1980 Olympic tournament. Comprised of blue mesh fabric throughout this shirt has USA in diagonal tackle twill lettering across the front while the proper NORCON tag is in the tail with a NORCON tag in the collar as well. Evident game-action wear is exhibited throughout by virtue of puck marks as well as periodic fraying of some of the stitching (seams tags and lettering). His last name CRAIG is affixed to the back nameplate directly above the proper twill number 30. The jersey is signed by both Craig (across the C in his nameplate) and Herb Brooks (across the A in Craigs nameplate). Brooks was head coach of the gold medal-winning U.S.Olympic hockey team at Lake Placid. Craigs signature in ink is severely faded while Brooks autograph in fine point black Sharpie is holding strong and rates a 9/10 on the signature scale. This is a truly historic piece of hockey memorabilia related to the most storied team in US hockey history.
Includes a letter of provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.
