In the early 1970s, there was no better football player in the world than Johan Cruyff. The Dutch striker was a scoring machine and playmaking magician for club and country. Recruited by Ajax’s developmental program at age ten, Cruyff debuted with the famed Dutch club in 1964 at 17 years old. In ten seasons, he netted 190 goals in 240 matches and won three European Cups (now UEFA Champions League) before joining FC Barcelona in 1973 for a then-record $2 million transfer fee. In his first season, "The Flying Dutchman” guided the Catalan club to its first La Liga title since 1960. He then led the Netherlands to the 1974 FIFA World Cup Final against West Germany. Johan received the Golden Ball award (World Cup Player of the Tournament) and went on to claim his third Ballon d'Or trophy in a four-year span.
A fixture on the Dutch National Team from 1966 to ’77, Cruyff tallied 33 goals in 48 caps, and Holland never lost a single match in which he scored. In his five seasons with Barca (1973-78), Cruyff slotted 60 goals and 83 assists in 180 matches. In 1999, Cruyff was voted "European Player of the Century" by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics. In the latest IFFHS poll for the greatest footballers of all time, Cruyff ranked fifth behind Messi, Pelé, Maradona and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Offered here is a Johan Cruyff 1978 Netherlands National Team jersey worn in a World Cup Qualifying match. The long-sleeved shirt comes in Holland’s solid orange home style from that era. It has the classic Royal Dutch Football Association (Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbalbond) lion crest in black silk-like fabric sewn on the right chest.
Cruyff's iconic number "14" is sewn on the reverse in similar black material with a white and black outline. (Johan wore #14 for most of his club and national team career.) Properly tagged by Adidas within the collar, the label reads “Xeebux” to denote the German apparel brand’s specialty sportwear division located in France at that time. The knit garment displays adequate use throughout and comes in excellent, all-original condition.
An important feature on this shirt is the fact that the KNVB lion crest has been relocated from the left chest to the right chest to cover the Adidas logo. Cruyff wore Puma cleats and was a loyal brand ambassador for Puma during the 1970s. At the 1974 World Cup, he refused to wear the three-striped Adidas kit for the Dutch squad, instead compromising with a specially designed two-stripe shirt that would not violate his deal with Puma.
Includes a letter of authenticity from MEARS for the jersey and a letter of provenance from the sister of former Brazilian footballer Afonsinho.
