Rick Dempsey was a modest-hitting great fielding catcher who lasted 24 years on the basis of his fielding skills and a veteran dugout presence that was valued by a half dozen clubs over that span. Still his longest and most stored tenure came with Baltimore where comic skills were renowned most famously for his "rain delay theatre" performances in which he emerged from the dugout in stockinged feet onto the tarpaulin covering the infield during a rain delay and pantomimed hitting an inside-the-park home run climaxed by his sliding into home plate on his belly on the wet tarp all to the raucous delight of the soggy fans. He sometimes did this while wearing a pair of underpants over his uniform making fun of teammate Jim Palmer's famous advertisements for Jockey brand briefs. This wonderful alternate orange jersey came from the early years of his stay in Baltimore. It sports the Wilson Size 44 tagging at the collar and an embroidered "77 2" small strip tag at the bottom of the front left tail. The pullover shirt has "Orioles" in black and white tackle twill on the front along with his No. 24 which appears front and back in the same fashion. Dempsey's name is affixed in black tackle twill to an orange nameplate on the back; the shirt shows light game use with barely a whisper of any fraying of the black or white stitching around letter or numbers. A wonderful piece from a beloved figure in Baltimore Orioles history.
