Featured here is a spectacular 1976 Innsbruck Winter Olympic Games gold medal issued to a 1st place winner in bobsled. These winner’s medals were among the largest ever produced. It measures 70 mm in diameter and 4 mm in thickness weighing 174 grams. It includes its original red and white ribbon which is completely intact and comes in its original red leather presentation box stamped in gold with the official Innsbruck Olympic Games emblem. All winners medals at these Games were minted by Austrian Mint and designed by Martha Coufal-Harti (who also designed medals at the 1964 Innsbruck Winter Olympics). This scarce gold medal is one of just 71 (individual and team) issued at the ’76 Winter Olympics as only 1123 athletes competed.

The obverse has the 1976 Games emblem—a coat of arms of the host city—at center surrounded by “INNSBRUCK 1976” and the five Olympic rings. “XII OLYMPISCHE WINTERSPIELE” is inscribed around the rim. The reverse displays a relief of the Olympic flame and the Bergisel Ski Jump stadium with the majestic Alps in the background; at the top is the name of the event in raised letters (“BOB ZWEIER”) and on the bottom right is the designer. The edge is marked “A925” by the ribbon’s loop to denote its gilt silver internal composition and gold plating. Presents in extra fine almost mint condition. Germany won gold in both bobsled (bobsleigh) events at these Games. The recipient of this medal had his name engraved on the obverse; it will be concealed during the auction at the consignor’s request and revealed only to the lucky winning bidder.

Includes Letter of Authenticity from renowned Olympic memorabilia expert Ingrid O'Neil.
