Offered here is an incredibly rare match-worn East Germany (DDR) National Team home jersey from 1976, worn by midfielder Hartmut Schade, an amazing piece of Cold War history preserved in the Oscar Bernardi Collection. The East Germans were Olympic champions at the 1976 Summer Games in Montreal. In the gold medal match against Poland, Schade opened the scoring with a goal in the 7th minute as his country cruised to a 3-1 victory. He earned 31 caps for East Germany (1974-80) and starred for Dynamo Dresden within the eastern bloc nation's top league.
The short-sleeve jersey is constructed in royal blue cotton material consistent with the East German style of the mid-1970's. It features a white V-neck collar and white trim on the cuffed sleeves. The left chest bears the embroidered DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) national football badge, a distinctive shield-shaped patch in royal blue with white "DDR" lettering and the East German national emblem featuring hammer, compass and wheat sheaves — a controversial and now highly collectible symbol of the Cold War. The reverse carries white "14" numerals in a classic block style. A partially torn white label from East German apparel manufacturer Kotaura (indicating size 3 and 100% cotton) hangs inside the collar. The jersey presents in outstanding condition for its age with moderate evidence of wear, retaining vibrant color and strong structural integrity.
The Oscar Bernardi Collection
This shirt comes from the personal collection of José Oscar Bernardi, better known as Oscar, who played for the Brazil National Team from 1977 to 1986. Included is a letter of provenance signed by Oscar. Most jerseys in the collection were obtained directly through player swaps after competition. Others were acquired via trade with footballers in Oscar’s wide network of teammates and friends. At age 71, he still resides in Brazil and is ready for his collection to be appreciated by others.
