ADDENDUM: Original letter from Monzn family misidentifies glove as being worn in 1975 Gratien Tonna bout. Photo evidence shows it is from Monzn's first fight against Rodrigo Valdez in 1976.

Argentina native Carlos Monzn was a hard-hitting middleweight who rose through the ranks in the late 1960s before establishing himself as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world. Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990 he was chosen by Ring Magazine in 2002 as the 11th greatest fighter of the last 80 years. On June 13 1976 Monzn stepped into the famous Stade Louis II ring in Monte Carlo to face Colombian Rodrigo Valdez who at that time held the WBC Middleweight belt. After 15 brutal rounds the Argentine earned a victory by unanimous decision to defend his WBA title and take back the WBC crown which had been lifted in 1975 when he refused to fight Valdez. It would be the second-to-last fight of Monzn's legendary career. His final bout was a rematch with Valdez in 1977 which yielded the same result - a 15-round UD over the Colombian - to extend and ultimately end his unprecedented streak of 14 straight WBA Middleweight title defenses. This lot features one of the actual boxing gloves Monzn wore for the first Valdez bout in '76. The eight-ounce two-tone (black and gold) left glove manufactured by VIS" shows good fight wear and is only missing its laces. A terrific historic piece of fight-worn equipment belonging to one of the most dominant middleweights in boxing history.
