Manuel Francisco dos Santos, known as Garrincha ("wren" in Portuguese), is widely regarded as one of the two or three greatest Brazilian footballers of all time. Only Pelé ranks safely ahead of him among those who have ever worn the Canarinho. The right winger played professionally from 1953 to ‘72 and was a fixture on the Brazil National Team for over a decade from 1955 to ‘66. Garrincha led Brazil to back-to-back World Cups in 1958 and '62, putting his Seleção teammates on his back without an injured Pelé during the latter title run for which he earned Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.

Called “Alegria do Povo” (People’s Joy) by his beloved fans, it was his other nickname – “Anjo das Pernas Tortas” (Angel with Bent Legs) that made him legendary. Garrincha turned his physical deformity of a crooked spine and severely bowed legs into a paradoxical advantage on the pitch that allowed him to move unpredictably and become one of the most talented dribblers ever.

This 1976-77 era Milionarios (Brazil) match worn jersey celebrates the late chapter of Garrincha’s football life. By that time, he had retired from official professional football but continued to play in friendly exhibition matches with the Milionarios. Not to be confused with the famed Colombian club based in Bogota, this barnstorming squad of retired Brazilian stars became famous for featuring Garrincha who appeared in nearly 500 matches from 1974 to ’82 alongside other legends such as Hilderaldo Bellini, Djalma Santos and Rivellino. (Garrincha died of cirrhosis in 1983 at the age of 49.)

The white short-sleeved shirt has a circular “Milionarios F.C. – Da Capital” crest sewn on the left chest with manufacturer “Athleta” sewn in red letters below. Garrincha’s iconic number “7” appears on the reverse in red. Garrincha wore #7 throughout his entire career, from Botafogo to the Brazilian National Team. The collar and sleeve ends are trimmed in blue and white striped ribbed material. The shirt displays solid evidence of multiple match use.
