In 1973 the New York Mets almost pulled off another miracle. Just four seasons removed from their World Series winning 1969 campaign the Mets finished the regular season with a record of 82-79 to claim the NL East division flag 1.5 games ahead of the runner-up St. Louis Cardinals. In the playoffs the Mets outlasted the Cincinnati Reds three games to two to win the National League pennant before bowing to the AL Champion Oakland As in seven games in the Fall Classic. The '73 Mets were one of the more fortunate teams in history as their .509 winning percentage remains the lowest of any pennant winner to date.
