Baseball was dealt a severe blow with the passing of Roberto Clemente on New Year’s Eve, 1972. The 38-year-old Pirates star was accompanying a load of first aid supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua when his plane went down, killing all aboard. That he chose to spend his New Year’s Eve bringing help to complete strangers in another country speaks to Roberto Clemente’s deep-rooted compassion and the reason MLB’s annual humanitarian award was named in his honor. The Puerto Rican legend had ended the season by recording his 3,000th career hit and helped the Pirates win the NL East title.
This bat was prepared for Clemente’s to use during that final season and perhaps to start 1973 before his tragic death. The Adirondack '194RW' Professional Model bat shows no visible game use. The barrel markings display some wear from age and storage and the ends and handle stripe show scuffing from contact with the ground and other equipment. The model number “194RW” is stamped into the knob with the bat’s specs written in what appears to be pencil. Ideally, Clemente’s immortal number “21” has been hand written on the knob in faded black marker. A beautiful game model bat dating to Roberto Clemente’s final season close to fateful plane crash. Includes LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA.
