Chosen by the new franchise in the 1968 expansion draft Boccabella played with the Expos until 1973 before being traded to the Giants enjoying a level of popularity with the new Montreal fans that far exceeded his limited role with the club before assuming the backstop duties full time in 1973. Playing in a glorified minor-league bandbox French fans at Jarry Park delighted when the teams public address announcer would drag out the enunciation of Boccabellas name to absurdity and beyond done in a professional wrestling style and in a seemingly interminable delivery.
