The 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates finished the regular season first in the National League East with a record of 97-65. They defeated the San Francisco Giants three games to one in the National League Championship Series and went to beat the Baltimore Orioles four games to three in the World Series. Managed by Danny Murtaugh the team played its first full season at Three Rivers Stadium which had opened in July the year before. This lot includes a team-signed baseball signed by 20 members of the title-winning club with a clubhouse signed Murtaugh on the sweet spot. Other notable signatures in blue ink on the ONL (Feeney) baseball include Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente Doc Ellis Steve Blass Charlie Sands Jim Grant Dave Giusti Jackie Hernandez as well as a pair of coaches Bill Virdon and Frank Oceak. Many signatures show some degree of fading although all remain legible. The autographs collectively rate 6-7/10 in our book.
