The 1971 Kansas City Royals finished second in the American League West Division standings with a record of 85 wins and 76 losses 16 games behind the Oakland Athletics. This marked the first time in franchise history that the Royals had a winning record. As it was only their third season it was the fastest winning record of any expansion club in Major League Baseball history to that point. The distinction would stand until the 1999 Arizona Diamondbacks won the National League West title in just their second season.

This lot features a 1971 Kansas City Royals team-issued professional model home flannel jersey in pristine condition. It includes uniform number “39” on the back which according to baseball records (Baseball Almanac) means this jersey was issued to infielder Gail Hopkins who also wore uniform number 18 that season. It does not appear to be game-worn and remains in outstanding condition. Proper Wilson manufacturer’s tagging [size 42] appears on the left front tail complete with washing instructions. Beneath that appears “1971 – 1” in blue chain stitching to indicate the season and set number. Across the front of the white home flannel is “Royals” in blue script tackle twill sewn directly onto the jersey. The Royals logo patch appears on the left sleeve while number “39” adorns the back also in blue tackle twill. All seven original buttons remain intact.
