The younger half of the famed Niekro Brothers duo the most prolific brother combination in MLB history Joe Niekro was one of the National League's top pitchers for nearly a decade. He used a fastball and a slider early in his 22-year career with mixed results then spent two seasons in Atlanta with brother Phil and got re-acquainted with the knuckleball that their father taught them. The knuckleball became an essential part of his arsenal though never his sole pitch. This coveted Detroit Tigers home jersey dates to 1971 during the early part of his career. The design is classic anchored by the gothic-script "D" stitched into the chest and navy blue piping around the collar and button front. "Niekro" and his No. 19 are affixed to the back in navy blue tackle twill. A Wilson Size 42 tag appears on the front-left tail; directly beneath is a white felt patch with "71 - Set 2" in navy blue chain stitching. The shirt shows good game use and is in standout seemingly problem-free condition. MEARS has given it a perfect A10 grade (sticker with cert# 305728 can be found inside the shirttail).
