This is a beautiful 1971 Jim Gilliam Los Angeles Dodgers game-worn road coaches jersey. "Rawlings Size 42" tag is sewn into collar. Blue felt "Dodgers" trimmed in white along with large red felt "19" are sewn on front. Large blue felt "19" trimmed in white appears on the back. Jersey displays moderate use. The shirt is essentially problem free save only for some wear visible around the blue and white piping on the back of the collar and some separation of the white felt background of his No. 9 on the jersey's back. Gilliam was a lifelong Dodger and a beloved figure in both Brooklyn and Los Angeles. In 1953 after two fine years with Montreal he came to Brooklyn forced Jackie Robinson off second base and was named the National League Rookie of the Year. He remained one of the most valuable and popular Dodger players until his retirement after the 1966 season. Jim stayed with the Dodgers as a coach from 1967 though his untimely death right after the close of the 1978 season. Two days after his death right before Game 1 of the 1978 World Series the Dodgers retired his uniform No. 19. His is the only number retired by the Dodgers of a player not in the Hall of Fame.
