The 1970 FIFA World Cup held in Mexico was the first hosted in North America and the last major tournament for Pelé in the famous Canarinho kit. The football legend went out in style, leading Brazil to its third World Cup crown all coming during his historic reign with Seleção that began in 1957. Considered the greatest World Cup squad ever assembled, Brazil went a perfect 6-0 in the tournament. They were victorious in every World Cup qualifier as well, a streak that lasted over two years. The Brazilian front five of Jairzinho, Pelé, Gérson, Tostão and Rivellino all wore the coveted #10 shirt for their respective club teams, and together they formed a relentless attack.
In the 1970 World Cup Final against Italy, Brazil ran away with a 4-1 victory thanks to goals from Pelé, Gérson, Jairzinho and Carlos Alberto. Manager Mário Zagallo, Pelé’s teammate on Brazil’s first two World Cup championship squads in 1958 and ’62, was overcome with emotion and sobbed from the sideline as the final whistle blew. After taking over head coaching duties just weeks before the tournament, he became the first ever to win the World Cup as both player and manager.
Presented here is a spectacular 1970 Brazil World Cup Champions photograph signed by 27 members of that immortal football team. The black-and-white 16” by 20” large-format photo from the period was taken on April 15, 1970, in front of the Palácio da Alvorada (the president’s official residence) in Brasília. The team visited the famous Presidential Palace to meet with Brazil President Emílio Garrastazu Médici before departing on their trip to Mexico where they came home with the Jules Rimet Trophy. Dressed in formal attire along with everyone else, Pelé is pictured in the third row, fourth from the right.
All autographs are neatly placed at the foot of the photo [over the palace steps] in the same green marker averaging a bold 9-10/10 in strength and eye appeal. The Pelé and Zagallo signatures are close to each other in the middle. Including Pelé, all starting XI have signed: Félix (GK), Carlos Alberto (Captain), Brito, Everaldo, Wilson Piazza, Rivellino, Gérson, Clodoaldo, Jairzinho and Tostão. Other notables are Marco Antonio, Paulo Cesar, Edu, Zé Maria, Joel Camargo, Baldocchi, Fontana, Roberto Miranda, Dario, Admildo Chirol (trainer), and Jack Nocaute (masseur).
The reverse of the vintage photo is blank except for “Copyright by Machete” stamped in purple. Image clarity is quite sharp for being black-and-white, and there are no condition issues other than minor edge and corner wear that has come naturally from age. We’ve never seen an oversized version of this historic image before, and it presents as an ideal display piece ready to framed and mounted on the next owner's wall. Includes letters of authenticity from PSA/DNA (will be uploaded upon arrival) and Beckett.
