In the early 1970s, there was no better football player in the world than Johan Cruyff. The Dutch striker was a scoring machine and playmaking magician for club and country. Recruited by Ajax’s developmental program at age ten, Cruyff debuted with the famed Dutch club in 1964 at 17 years old. In ten seasons, he netted 190 goals in 240 matches and won three European Cups (now UEFA Champions League) before joining FC Barcelona in 1973 for a then-record $2 million transfer fee.

In his first season, "The Flying Dutchman” led the Catalan club to its first La Liga title since 1960. He then guided Holland to the 1974 FIFA World Cup Final against West Germany. Johan received the Golden Ball award (World Cup Player of the Tournament) and went on to claim his third Ballon d'Or trophy in a four-year span. In his five seasons with Barca (1973-78), Cruyff tallied 60 goals and 83 assists in 180 matches. He later became FCB’s most successful manager in history with eleven trophies in eight years. In 1999, Cruyff was voted "European Player of the Century" by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics. In the latest IFFHS poll for the greatest footballers of all time, Cruyff ranked fifth behind Messi, Pelé, Maradona and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Presented here is a Johan Cruyff Ajax match worn and signed away jersey dating to the 1970-72 era. The white long-sleeved shirt is bare on the front (Ajax's away style back then) with Cruyff's iconic number "14" sewn on the back in red. (He wore #14 for most of his club and national team career.) Properly tagged by English sportswear brand Butka within the collar, it calls out the special long-sleeve style “Xeebux” on the label. Cruyff has autographed the back ‘4’ in black marker. The knit garment exhibits definitive wear and comes in terrific, all-original condition.

Authentication & Provenance

Letters of Authenticity from MEARS for the jersey and PSA/DNA for the autograph. The source of the shirt holds one of the largest vintage football jersey collections in the hobby, having long ago worked as a staff member for multiple clubs and a prestigious national team where he obtained most of his items directly from players and equipment managers (i.e. kitmen).
