The late Jim Murray was one of the finest sportswriters this country has ever produced. A longtime sports columnist for the Los Angeles Times (1961 to '98) Murray was also a writer and columnist for Sports Illustrated from 1953-1961 and Time magazine from 1948-1955. Many of his achievements include winning the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association "Sportswriter of the Year" award an astounding 14 times (12 of those consecutively). This lot features the original 1-of-1 portrait painting that Murray received after winning Sportswriter of the Year honors in 1969. The oil painting which was signed by the artist Tommy McDonald is beautifully framed and matted and measures 23" wide by 27" high. On the lower portion of the frame includes an engraved bronzed plaque that reads: "JIM MURRAY 1969 SPORTSWRITER OF THE YEAR U.S.A. CHOSEN BY HIS CONTEMPORARIES."
