Presented here is a wonderful offering from one of the greatest power hitters in baseball history: Harmon Killebrew’s 1969 game-used bat from his one and only MVP season. The Hillerich & Bradsby / Louisville Slugger fine piece of lumber comes with outstanding provenance from his former Twins teammate Phil Roof.
Despite his "Killer" nickname Harmon Killebrew was a quiet kind man who did not take much to the partying lifestyle enjoyed by many of his peers. He became one of the American League's most feared power hitters in the 1960’s belting 40 homers in a season eight times. Harmon had his greatest season in 1969 posting leading totals in home runs (49) RBI (145) walks (145) and on-base percentage (.431) to help lead the Twins to an A.L. West Division title; more importantly it earned him the American League’s Most Valuable Player award. The 5’ 11” right-handed slugger currently sits at #12 on the all-time home run list with 573 and his legend grows thicker by the years.
The 35-inch 34.1-oz. ash bat has a 4” crack on the handle and exhibits evidence of significant game use. Several ball marks and ball stitch impressions are visible on the left and back barrel. Cleat impressions can be seen on the right and back barrel along with black streak marks from bat racks or other means. The model number “S207” is stamped into the knob. Fresh to the hobby after almost 50 years in a former MLB player'spossession this offered bat is a fine example for the esteemed bat connoisseur or Killebrew collector.
Includes LOA from Phil Roof. Full LOA (1B12508) from John Taube of PSA/DNA.
Provenance: This lot comes directly from the personal collection of former MLB catcher Phil Roof who logged 15 seasons (1961 1964-77) behind the dish with nine different franchises most notably the Minnesota Twins. Roof spent five consecutive years (1971-76) with the Twins where he was teammates with Harmon Killebrew. Following his playing career Roof served as a bullpen coach for three teams before managing in the Twins organization for 16 years (mostly in the PCL) until retiring from full-time duties in 2005. He received each of the bats featured in this auction directly from the players as gifts.
