Bench appears in a pinstriped Reds uniform and cap with a youthful, determined gaze, framed by the distinctive "burlap" borders that define the 1968 Topps design. The reverse notes that Bench "impressed the Reds in his brief trial with them late during 1967" after slugging 23 home runs at Triple-A Buffalo, an early glimpse of the power that would follow.

Bench delivered on that promise immediately, winning the 1968 National League Rookie of the Year Award and launching a career that reshaped the catching position. He captured NL MVP honors in 1970 and 1972, earned 14 All-Star selections and 10 consecutive Gold Gloves, and slugged 389 career home runs. As the cornerstone of Cincinnati's "Big Red Machine," Bench led the Reds to back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 1976, taking home 1976 World Series MVP honors. He was elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1989.
