This pairing of 1968 Topps issues brings together two of the most compelling Mantle cards from his final active season. The first, 1968 Topps #280 Mickey Mantle (SGC GD 2, cert #9690316), presents a color batting pose photograph on the burlap-textured Topps design of that year, with the distinctive red "1st Base Yankees" position circle — a well-known curiosity as Mantle spent his final season at first base. The card presents with wear consistent with its SGC GD 2 designation, and the reverse carries a complete career major and minor league batting record noting his World Series record of 18 home runs.
The companion card, 1968 Topps #490 Super Stars Killebrew/Mays/Mantle (SGC VG/EX 4, cert #5197289), features a horizontal-format group photograph of three American and National League power hitting icons, with the "Super Stars" yellow circle emblem at lower right. The reverse text celebrates the trio's combined 1,462 career home runs at the time of issue, referencing Mantle's triple crown season, Mays' 50-homer campaign, and Killebrew's AL home run crowns. Both cards have been encapsulated in individual SGC holders.
The pairing captures Mantle during his final campaign, making these among the last standard Topps issues to depict him as an active player, and offers the added bonus of the iconic triple-star Super Stars multi-player issue alongside.
