The Green Bay Packers dominated the National Football League and the first two Super Bowls from their tiny northern Wisconsin hamlet but Joe Namath & Co. seemingly decided it was time for some big-city bravura by the time Super Bowl III rolled around. With Namath’s infamous “guarantee” in place before kickoff the upstart American Football League finally made the statement that had been more than a decade in the making. The AFL Champion Jets bested the heavily favored Baltimore Colts 16-7 and if the question of prevailing NFL superiority wasn’t completely put to rest with the victory there certainly was an enormous dent neatly placed at the center of the debate. With that sterling resume comes this striking pristine official Riddell VSR-4 Proline Jets helmet to tell that story filled as it is with 25 autographs from that legendary Jets ball club with some of the players adding their uniform number inscription. The lineup now as then starts with Broadway Joe: Namath (easily the largest of all autographs) Don Maynard George Sauer Matt Snell Emerson Boozer Larry Grantham Bill Baird Curley Johnson John Elliott Bob Talamini Ralph Baker and others. The contrast of the bold black Sharpie autographs on the white helmet is breathtaking which probably seems appropriate for an artifact linked with this particular game that is often described with the very same adjective.
