The Olympic men's basketball tournament at the 1968 Mexico City Summer Games took place at the Palacio de los Deportes from October 13-25. The United States, led by future NBA stars Jo Jo White and Spencer Haywood, defeated Yugoslavia to win its seventh consecutive gold medal, while the Soviet Union took the bronze against Brazil. Yugoslavia stunned the Soviets in the Semifinals and played valiantly in the Final to earn the silver medal. The star of the "The Blues" (Plavi) was Krešimir Cosic, the 6' 11" Croatian sensation who revolutionized the sport in Europe and was credited with being the first basketball player in the world to ever play all five positions. In 1996, he became just the third international player elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame.

This offered silver winner's medal was awarded to an unknown member of the Yugoslavian Basketball team. Made of gilt silver, the obverse has “XX OLIMPADA MEXICO 1968” alongside Nike, Greek Goddess of Victory. The reverse shows a champion on the shoulders of celebratory athletes. The unique design by Italian sculptor Guiseppe Cassioli includes a 25 mm square plate with a pictograph of a basketball and hoop that is attached by bezel setting connects to the medal. The green ribbon that came with it is no longer present. Measuring 60 mm in diameter and 3.5 mm thick, the medal weighs 122 grams including the event plate. It comes in outstandiing condition with well-defined relief features and very light handling. Hardly any surface scratches are visible and the only blemish is one small ding on the bottom edge.

Mexico City was the first Latin American city to host an Olympic Games. This is only the second winner's medal of any kind (gold, silver or bronze) from the 1968 Summer Olympics we have ever offered.
