Featured here is a silver winner's medal from the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics awarded to a member of the Czechoslovakia National Football team. The formidable Czech squad made it all the way to the gold medal match, but fell in heartbreaking fashion to their Hungarian rivals. The team's leading scorers were Ivan Mráz (five goals) and Josef Vojta (four goals). Goalkeeper František Schmucker allowed just five goals during the entire tournament, including a devastating own-goal in the Final that led to a 2-1 defeat and runner-up finish on the podium. It marked the first Olympic winner's medal won by the Czechoslovakia soccer team, which eventually reached the top of the podium in 1980.
Made of gilt silver from designor Toshikaka Koshiba (based on the classic design of Giuseppe Cassioli), this elegant medal struck by the Japanese Mint measures 63 mm in diameter (and weighs 112 grams (including ribbon). The front has "XVII Olympiad Tokyo 1964" and "Football" with a seated Victory and the Colosseum in the background. The reverse depicts a victorious athlete being carried by several jubilant athletes.
The 1964 Summer Olympics marked the first Games to present winners' medals with ribbon hangers allowing athletes to wear them around their necks during the medal ceremony. This one's original ribbon in white and five Olympic colors, attached to a loop and tied in a bow with yellow felt backing, comes in expectional, near-mint condition; this is a huge bonus as most ribbons are either missing or totally worn out. The medal remains very well-preserved with the high points retaining a lustrous finish. There is minimal tarnishing to its silver surface and just some minor discoloration around the perimeter edge and rim.
Winners' medals from the 1964 Tokyo Games rarely surface. This is the first of any kind that we have offered, and you can count on one hand the number of '64 Summer gold, silver or bronze medals sold publicly.
