Our World was the first live multinational multi-satellite television production. National broadcasters from 14 countries around the world, coordinated by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), participated in the two-hour live TV event on Sunday, June 25, 1967. Broadcast in 24 countries, it had an estimated 400 to 700 million viewers, the largest television audience up to that date. Four communications satellites were used to provide worldwide coverage, which was a technological milestone in television broadcasting.
Creative artists, including opera singer Heather Harper, film director Franco Zefferelli, conductor Leonard Bernstein, sculptor Alexander Calder and painter Joan Miró were invited to perform or appear in separate live segments, each of them produced by one of the participant broadcasters. The most famous segment was one from the United Kingdom starring The Beatles performing their hit song "All You Need Is Love" for the very first time. In fact, they wrote it specifically for this event!
This original Keystone Press photo shows The Beatles' full band of four (McCartney, Lennon, Ringo & Goerge, from left to right) wearing sandwich boards with their message of “All You Need Is Love” in French and English. The 8x10 photo remains in fantastic shape with no creases and minor corner wear. The reverse has the approprate press stamp from Keystone, some press notes and a full detailed caption of this special moment in time captured so eloquently.
