On November 21, 1963, President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline landed at Houston’s Hobby Airport for the next stop on their Texas tour. The President was visiting Texas to raise money for the upcoming 1964 election as well as soothe infighting among the Texas Democratic Party leadership. The day’s schedule included a reception of dignitaries at the airport followed by an appearance at the League of United Latin American Citizens dinner at the Rice Hotel. The day would be capped off with another dinner appearance at the Sam Houston Coliseum for U.S. Rep. Albert Thomas. The Kennedy’s were accompanied on the Texas trip by Cecil W. Stoughton, the first official White House photography. It is through Stoughton’s lens that the final days of JFK’s life was documented. This photograph was taken by Stoughton at one of Kennedy’s appearances that day in Houston. The photo is a wonderfully heroic portrait in profile of JFK as he prepares to address the crowd before him.
Though other photos exist from this day and the next, fatal afternoon in Dallas, this Cecil Stoughton photograph is the last known solo image ever taken of John F. Kennedy. The 8x10 photo remains in outstanding condition with no issues to report. The reverse has the Kodak Paper labeling as well as a stamp identifying the negative number and Cecil Stoughton as the photographer. A very poignant and tremendously rare photograph from the eve of one of our nation’s most tragic moments. The photograph has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 Authentic by PSA.
