Presented is the rookie card of the player who revolutionized the role of the defenseman: a 1966 Topps #35 Bobby Orr Rookie, graded EX-MT 6 by PSA. Orr's rookie is among the most important hockey cards ever produced. Topps' distinctive woodgrain borders readily show wear, so well-preserved examples are always in high demand.
The obverse features the iconic "television set" design of the 1966-67 Topps hockey issue. A youthful Orr in a Boston Bruins sweater is framed against a packed arena backdrop, with "Bobby Orr • Defence • Boston Bruins" printed along the woodgrain border at the base. The bilingual reverse, marked "Printed in Canada," notes that Orr came to Boston "direct from the Oshawa Generals Junior 'A' Club." It calls him "the most publicized Junior in many years" and predicts that he "certainly will become one of the future stars in the N.H.L."
That prediction proved an understatement. Orr won the Calder Trophy in 1967, eight consecutive Norris Trophies and three straight Hart Trophies. He remains the only defenseman to win the Art Ross Trophy, and he did it twice. His famous flying goal clinched the 1970 Stanley Cup, and he added a second Cup in 1972. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979 at age 31.
This example displays bright color, a sharp image and woodgrain borders that remain notably well-preserved for the EX-MT 6 grade. It is housed in an earlier-generation PSA holder. Encapsulated by PSA (Cert. #14617978).
