The UCLA Bruins and legendary coach John Wooden won their first National Championship in 1963-64 after completing a perfect 30-0 season. Utilizing a starting five all 6’ 5” and under the “Wizard of Westwood” orchestrated an innovative zone press defense and fast-paced offense to take his team to achieve perfection. The following 1964-65 campaign the Bruins repeated as National Champions led by Keith Erickson Kenny Washington and Gail Goodrich who averaged 24.8 points per game to earn Co-Player of the Year honors. UCLA finished 28-2 and defeated Michigan 91-80 in the title game behind Goodrich’s amazing 42-point effort.
Offered here is the original twelve-by-six foot 1965 UCLA Bruins National Championship banner celebrating the program’s second ever title. Hung in the rafters at Pauley Pavilion when it opened in June 1965 this special piece of basketball history was present for 47 years and nine more NCAA titles until it was removed in 2012 for facility renovations. The banner was auctioned at a private school-sponsored UCLA Alumni event shortly thereafter and won by a proud alum who had it professionally framed and displayed in his Los Angeles home for the past five years.
When the Bruins won back-to-back titles in ’64 and ’65 they played most home games at little 2000-seat Men's Gym—disparagingly nicknamed the "B.O. Barn”—and were often forced to play at other L.A. venues for crowds larger than 1300. Raised just as UCLA moved into Pauley for the beginning of the 1965-66 season the banner marked the arrival of freshman Lew Alcindor and helped christen a larger-than-life facility that remains one of the most iconic sporting venues in the U.S.
The gorgeous dark blue and yellow-gold felt banner is made of 100% virgin wool by Whiting & Davis of Los Angeles. The Whiting tagging appears just inside the lower left corner. The majestic 1960’s era UCLA school colors stand out brilliantly on this simple yet elegant layout. Each gold felt letter and number is individually hand-stitched on the blue background. Overall the banner remains in excellent condition with no holes in the fabric and hardly any color fading. There is minor wear on the edges and corners from wall display. The No. “1” between “UCLA and “1965” atop “BASKETBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS” speaks loudly to the unparalleled success of Wooden’s program from 1964 to 1975. 10 titles in 12 years. Four undefeated seasons. An 88-game win streak. No team—at least on the men’s side—has ever come close to matching these feats.
