This action shot shows Mickey Mantle poised to uncork his mighty swing during the July 18, 1965, game against the Washington Senators. Also awaiting Mike McCormick’s pitch is Senators catcher Don Zimmer and home plate umpire Al Salerno. Injuries accrued during a lifetime of hard-nosed ballplaying were beginning to catch up with The Mick, and he was often used as a pinch hitter to give the aging slugger some much-needed recuperation time. During this July 18, 1965, game, Mantle was put in to pinch hit for Pete Mikkelsen in the bottom of the 6th, and he would play the rest of the game in left field. The Type 1 photo has wide white borders. There is some creasing along. The edges, though none distract from the dramatic game action. The reverse has a United Press credit stamp, Sport magazine stamp, and several handwritten notations. The photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
