This brilliant portrait of Mickey Mantle dates from 1956, the year that the Yankees legend always called his “favorite summer.” That season, Mantle won the Triple Crown with a .353 batting average, 52 homers, and 130 RBIs. He also led the Yankees to a World Series championship over the Brooklyn Dodgers and took home his first of three American League MVP awards. This photo, taken by renowned photographer Don Wingfield, was snapped in Washington, D.C., and shows Mantle holding a bat – not just any bat, but curiously a Hank Bauer model bat, as can be seen engraved on the barrel. The Type 1 photo has been printed to its edges and displays sharp detail and balanced contrast. The reverse of the photo bears the “AUG 15 1956” date stamp, along with the Don Wingfield credit stamps and handwritten notations. The photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
