Born and raised in Oklahoma, Bobby Ray Murcer signed with the New York Yankees out of high school just like his idol, Mickey Mantle. In 1965, the highly touted prospect batted .322 with 16 homers, 90 RBI, and 18 stolen bases with the Yanks’ Single-A affiliate in Greensboro to earn Carolina League MVP honors. He was called up to the big leagues that same year at the age of 19, appearing in 11 games and going 9-for-37 (.243) with a home run in 37 at-bats.

Murcer was groomed to be the eventual replacement in center field for the original “Oklahoma Kid”, who by then was in the twilight of his legendary career in pinstripes. Those would certainly be big shoes to fill, but after missing two years due to military obligations he returned in 1969 to officially replace the retired Mick with a bang. For the next six seasons, Murcer batted .285 with an average of 23 homers, 89 RBI and 88 runs scored while playing Gold Glove defense (1972) in center and making the All-Star team five straight years.

This offered New York Yankees road jersey may have been the first ever worn by young Bobby during his MLB debut season of ’65. Properly tagged by MacGregor with a dark size 44 label inside the collar, the gray flannel shirt comes all-original with "Set 1 1964” year tagging on the interior of the lower button path. "New York" is sewn across the chest in block letters and Murcer’s No. “17” is sewn on the upper back in matching navy blue felt. Both the letters and number are unaltered. According to MEARS and backed by our research, no other Yankee player or coach wore #17 in 1965, meaning this had to be Murcer’s debut/rookie jersey. Murcer wore this number in 1965 and ’66 during his two brief call-ups with the Yanks. Wear is described as “heavy” by MEARS, who has given the shirt a near perfect A9.5 grade. Full paperwork from MEARS is included.

This jersey would have been worn for Murcer's first hit, run, home run, and RBI. To the crowd's surprise, Murcer's first hit was a home run against the Senators on Sept. 14, 1965. A stark contrast from Murcer's home debut.
