On September 10, 1963, the Alou brothers became the first trio of siblings in MLB history to bat in the same frame. Five days later they became the first siblings to hold down all three outfield spots together in the same inning when they did so in a 13-5 Giants win at Forbes Field. While the eldest, Felipe, is easily the most recognized Alou after he parlayed 17 years as a player with 15 more as big-league skipper of the Expos and Giants, middle brother Matty holds the best batting average of the Dominican trio with a .307 career clip. In fact, Matty won the Alou’s only NL batting title when he hit .342 in 1966 for the Pirates.
Offered here is a classic 1963 Matty Alou San Francisco Giants game worn home jersey from that season of historic firsts, with an autograph from older brother Felipe. The cream-colored flannel exhibits excellent game use with heavy piling and stretching to the fabric. The front left tail displays proper tagging from apparel maker Tim McAuliffe with year (’63) and size (42) labels. Inside the rear collar, a felt strip tag bears "M. Alou" chain-stitched in black. The “GIANTS” team name is sewn across the chest, while Matty’s player number “41” is sewn on the reverse. The slightly frayed letters and numbers come in black felt on orange twill and are all-original to the jersey. At some point long after Matty had worn this shirt, Felipe Alou signed the right shirttail in black marker. MEARS has given it a nearly perfect A9.5 grade, the only deduction stemming from minor separation of the name strip tag in the collar. Includes LOAs from MEARS (A9.5) and PSA/DNA.
